حول المعرض
كيف يمكن التحدث عن شيء دون التحدث عنه؟ وفقًا لعالِم الاجتماع الفرنسي بيير بورديو أن ما يعطي للكلمة المنطوقة شرعيتها هو المتلقي، إذن فإن أقصى درجات الانسجام عندما يتوق المتلقي أن يقص عليه الراوي قصة. انطلاقًا من ذلك يرجع اهتمام مروه بن حليم في انتاج هذا المعرض إلى كيفية تداول اللغة بطرق مختلفة، بالإضافة إلى تعددية إمكانياتها التي تجعل منها وسيطًا سائلًا ومُمَوهًا أحيانًا وفقًا للسياق.
تشكلت منهجية الإنتاج في هذا المعرض من البحث والملاحظة في اللغة كمصدر لثنائية (القوة والضعف) معًا، والتي يُمكن التعرف عليها عند تفكيكنا لميكانيكية انتاج خطابات التليفزيون الرسمية، والأمثال الشعبية -وتحديدًا الخاصة بالطعام- كطريقة لإنتاج لغة مموهة. فقد اتخذت بن حليم من تلك الثنائية مصدرًا لإنتاج مجموعة من الأعمال التي تتفاوض فيها على فضاء بين الواقعية والسريالية، مما تخلق لغتها الخاصة.
مرت اللغة في هذا المشروع بتحولات ذهنية ومادية متنوعة، كنسخ النصوص والمجسمات، وتحرير النص والصورة، والحفر الآلي على أسطح صلبة، وغيرها، استعارة عن ميكانيكية التصنيع الآلي للخطابات، فقد تخصص الأعمال أيضًا مناهج تعميم النصوص الرسمية على الجمهور، كالجداريات التذكارية المصنوعة من الرخام الفخم في الأماكن العامة، والشاشات السحرية لتلقين الخطابات التليفزيونية، وأخيرًا البث الحي.

عن الفنانة
مروة بن حليم فنانة ليبية مصرية. حصلت على شهادة الماجستير في الفنون الجميلة في جامعة ساذرن ميثوديست SMU، دالاس، تكساس، عام 2017، وشهادة البكالوريوس من الجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة، في عام 2014. تهتم بن حليم في ممارساتها الفنية متعددة التخصصات بهياكل السلطة والذاكرة الجماعية والهوية. ممتدة من النص والفيديو والأداء والنحت. عُرضت أعمالها الفنية في مصر، والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، والإمارات العربية المتحدة، والمكسيك، والمغرب، وإيطاليا، وإسبانيا.

How can you talk about something without talking about it? According to French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, “what creates the power of words… is the belief in the legitimacy of words and of those who utter them…words alone cannot create this belief.” With language, the onus is on the recipient and their desire to receive and harmonize with the words from a narrator. Springing from this idea, Marwa Benhalim’s work in The Cookbook is interested in the circulation of language, its fluid capacities, while being a camouflaged-context-dependent medium.
The production of the works in the show began with Benhalim’s research on language, observing its duality as a source of strength and weakness. Informed by this dualism, Benhalim’s work negotiates a space between realism and surrealism, creating its own language. Together the works dismantle the mechanics of official television speech production and popular proverbs and idioms – specifically in relation to food and consumption.
Language as a medium in its own right, goes through a variety of conceptual and material translations in the works, from the transcription of texts and objects, to their mechanical engravement on solid surfaces. The works appropriate the tools of disseminating official texts in public spaces, such as commemorative memorial luxurious marble murals, recorded televised speeches, and finally, live broadcasting.

About the Artist
Marwa Benhalim is a Libyan/Egyptian artist. She received her MFA in Studio Art at the Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas in 2017 and a BA from the American University in Cairo, Egypt in 2014. Benhalim interdisciplinary practice is concerned with power structures, collective memory and identity. It spans text, video, performance and sculpture. Her work has shown in Egypt, USA, UAE, Mexico, Morocco, Italy and Spain.
